Tennis West sanctioned three Australian Ranking tournaments for juniors during the school holidays, culminating in the State Open Age offering Gold level points to winners. There were 274 entries, playing over 400 matches, culminating in the finals held at the State Tennis Centre on Saturday.
There were 68 boys in the 12’s playing through qualifying and the main draw, ending in a final match between two Luka’s (the chair umpire knew which was which), with Luka Brown (4) winning 6-4,6-2 over Luca Katsamakis (7). Luka Brown had defeated the number one seed, Arden De Melo, and Luca Katsamakis defeated the number two seed Ryan Mcconkey to progress to an exciting final. Luca Katsamakis then teamed up with Kendrick Chia (4) to play the doubles final against Luka Brown and his partner Derek Pham (2), winning a very close match 7-6(3) and 7-5.
In the girl’s 12’s event, the top seeds played each other with second seed Casey Tay victorious in a nail-biter with Natasha Camer-Pesci, losing the first set 2-6 and winning the next two 6-3,6-0. Casey and her partner Talia Gibson then won the doubles final against Shanelle Iaconi and Taylah Preston, 6-3,6-3.
The top seed in the boys 14’s, Conor Enslin, fell to Charlie Dossiter, and the second seed, Narayan Judge retired with a rib injury, allowing fifth seed Kenneth Prete and sixth seed Reuben Giorgio to progress to the final, with Kenneth claiming the win 6-4,6-2. Kenneth and his partner Ben Dachs then beat Leyton Ashby and Joshua Martelli in the doubles final.
Friends and doubles partners, Nadia Rajan (1) and Crystal Mildwaters (3) took the court against each other in the girls 14’s singles with Crystal winning 6-2,6-3. They returned to defeat Ruby Culley and Georgia Tovich, seeded second, in the doubles final 6-2, 7-6.
Another Luca won the boy’s 16’s, Luca Bonini (3) beat Daniel Downey (4) 6-4,6-2 in the final. After beating Daniel Downey and Simon Ferreira in the doubles semi’s, Harry Burrell and Lachlan Ivulich (4) played a great match against Evan Manso and Elliott Smith (3), winning in a match tie-breaker 7-6, 5-7, 10-2.
The top seeds in the girls 16’s progressed easily to the finals, with Jasmine Carswell (1) losing only 4 games and Maddy Muller-Hughes (2) losing only 5 games. The first set of the finals was tightly fought, going 7-5 in favour of Maddy, who then took the second set 6-1 to earn the trophy.
Many of these players had returned from the Rod Laver in Queensland or played the Silver event at Sorrento the week prior so there was no shortage of good matches for them over the holidays. Well done everyone. Back to school, training and league matches until the next holidays. Keep up the good work. You are future champions.
