The Applecross SHS Boy’s and Girl’s tennis teams last week travelled to Albury, NSW to compete in the School Sport Australia National School’s Tennis Championships. The event featured the top twelve boys and top ten girl’s schools from around Australia competing for the national title.
The Applecross Girl’s team of Lara Vujasinovic, Maddy Muller-Hughes, Skye Royall, Hayley Burton and Olivia Mann went through their round robin group undefeated. This effort included a fabulous 5-1 victory of perennial contenders Maribyrnong College from Melbourne. This meant a semi-final showdown with Kelvin Grove from Queensland. The girl’s came through a tense battle to set up a final against reigning world school’s champions Meriden School from Sydney. It was not to be in the final, but the girls capped off a tremendous week by finishing as the second best school tennis team in Australia- a fantastic effort!
The boy’s team of Austin Vos, Kaey-Den Tan, Nikola Losic, Tyler Mizuhata and Siddhant Mathankar battled through some tough matches during the week, many of them coming down to third set tie breakers or crucial doubles matches, to finish their round robin group in fourth. In the knockout rounds, they had a great win over 2015 national runners up Haileybury College from Melbourne, before losing to Marryatville HS. This meant the boy’s team finished as the sixth best school tennis team in Australia.
A huge congratulations to the players whose work ethic, attitude and professionalism throughout the week was outstanding.
