The 2018 WA Tennis Industry Awards Night, was held on Friday 12 October and was proudly presented by major sponsor KC Australia. The prestigious event celebrates tennis in Western Australia and recognises the outstanding achievements of our state’s junior and senior players, officials, coaches, administrators and volunteers.
This year, the event was held at the brand new River View Room at Optus Stadium, in front of a record crowd of 340 members of the WA tennis community. There was also a record number of Award Nominations this year, with over 55 submissions across all 17 Award Categories.
Alexander Park Tennis Club was named Most Outstanding Large Club for the second year in a row. This also marks the fourth time in seven years the club has been bestowed the coveted title.
In the Most Outstanding Small Club category, Tom Price Tennis Club and Safety Bay Tennis Club shared the honours.
Cottesloe TC stalwart, Allan Wall was honoured with the Service to Tennis Award for his considerable contribution to his club, Tennis West, and the sport over the last 60 years. Whilst in the Volunteer Achievement category, Alexander Park Tennis Club President, Ceri Wagnell, and Safety Bay Tennis Club Secretary Toni Bellingham were named joint winners.
This year, the Coaching Excellence Club Award was re-named the Arthur Marshall Coaching Excellence Club Award in honour of the outstanding legacy of the great Arthur Marshall who passed away earlier this year. Mike Gill, from Next Generation Perth South, took out the honours in this award category.
In the Coaching Excellence: High Performance Category, John Thorpe from Dalkeith Tennis Club was recognised for his work in delivering a quality, comprehensive, holistic coaching program.
Tennis West CEO, Michael Roberts was impressed with the number and quality of award submissions this year.
“Tennis in WA continues to thrive, with 180 affiliated clubs and over 20,000 registered participants, all backed by the helping hands of over 3,000 dedicated volunteers and 268 coach members. Tennis in schools in particular, has boasted one of the biggest growths this year, with 360 National School Partnership Programs (NSPP) Schools, and over 44,000 Hot Shots School Participants. Our ultimate aim is to transition these players along the tennis pathway and lead them to long-term engagement at our local clubs.”
“The WA Tennis Industry Awards Night is a great opportunity to reflect on the successes of the last 12 months, whilst celebrating and rewarding the achievements of some stand out clubs, schools, coaches, players and volunteers, who have all made an incredible contribution to our sport.” Mr Roberts said.
All winners of the WA Tennis Industry Awards Night were nominated for their respective categories at the Newcombe Medal Australian Tennis Awards to be held at Crown Melbourne on Monday 26 November.
