Albany based tennis clubs currently have a great opportunity to engage in Regional Tennis venue feasibility study. The study is being funded by the City of Albany, Tennis Australia and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
The project scope includes engaging with all stakeholders and in particular the three Albany based tennis clubs, being; Emu Point Sporting Club, Lawley Park Tennis Club and Merrifield Park Tennis Club to determine the infrastructure requirements for tennis as a sport. There are currently 22 courts available at the three affiliated Albany clubs. No floodlit courts within the city is a major concern given that a key growth area for tennis is weekday social play. Floodlit courts within the City of Albany will be a great bonus for the whole community.
Indicative requirements for a regional tennis venue would be the capacity to host national/state based events, high performance training and talent feeder focus, grass roots development and community health and well-being objectives. Courts and lighting requirements that comply with ITF standards and ancillary amenities that support the activities of a club and other users as part of a sustainable operation would be a key outcome.
Dave Lanfear Consulting has been engaged by the City of Albany to conduct the feasibility project. The consultation process is currently underway with clubs and other stakeholders being engaged as part of the project.
This project aligns with specific key recommendations in the ‘Tennis West Strategic Facilities Plan (a roadmap for the future of tennis facilities -2018 and beyond)’. This document specifically focuses on the delivery of lit courts, sustainable and multi-functional tennis clubs, strong interaction with the Department of Education and increase in the number of Hot Shot courts.
