Australia’s top ranked junior players will hit the courts at Cottesloe Tennis Club this week, vying to claim the coveted 12/U and 14/U Australian Grasscourt Championship title.
One of just three Australian junior championships offered throughout the year, the competition brings together 32 of the country’s top performing male and female athletes from each age group. Athletes who have travelled from across the country, will contest the tournament’s ten events including singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions; in addition to earning valuable Australian Ranking (AR) points.
WA is well represented at the championships with 18 local players set to capitalise on the home ground advantage. Leading the charge for WA will be 14/U top seed Zach Viiala and 14/U number one and number two seeds, Taylah Preston and Jessie Culley.
Tennis West CEO Michael Roberts says WA has been campaigning for many years for the opportunity to host a national junior championship.
“The opportunity to host the Australian Grasscourt Championships at Cottesloe TC is a fantastic win for our WA junior athletes who are well accustomed to travelling large distances for events of this calibre,”
“WA is producing some of the country’s most outstanding talent so it’s wonderful to see these players afforded the opportunity to play such a pinnacle event on home turf,”
“It’s a win for the players, but also for their families and friends who will no doubt enjoy the chance to watch the players compete against some of the country’s top ranked athletes,” Roberts said.
Minister for Sport and Recreation Mick Murray said it was a wonderful opportunity for WA to showcase the sport’s finest junior talent.
“Australian tennis is rich with junior talent and the WA tennis community warmly welcomes the opportunity to host this year’s grasscourt championships.
“With 18 local players taking part, the championships present a terrific opportunity for WA’s juniors to stamp their mark on the national stage and hopefully pick up some titles in their age groups.
“We are delighted to welcome the country’s best juniors and their families to Perth for what will no doubt be a memorable experience on and off the tennis court.” Murray said.
The Australian Grasscourt Championships runs from Monday 7 October through until Saturday 12 October at the Cottesloe TC.
