Primary School students from across Australia will hit the courts at Alexander Park Tennis Club on Sunday for the start of the 2019 Bruce Cup; the largest primary school teams-based event open to the country’s most talented 12/U tennis players.

Hosted by WA for just the second time in the event’s history, the teams-based competition will bring together more than 100 junior athletes from across the country who will unite in representing their home state or territory whilst competing for the prestigious Bruce Cup title.

Looking to capitalise on the teams home ground advantage, 14 of WA’s most talented 12/U players will take to the courts with confidence when the week long competition commences on Sunday morning. In a further coup for WA, Jake Dembo, Liam McDowell and Nemanja Savic will bring unprecedented experience off the back of the trio’s recent win in QLD at the Boys 11/u National Championship earlier this year.

Having only competed in the longstanding event since 2006, WA are yet to lay claim to the prestigious title.

Running concurrently with the team’s event will be the National Singles Championships, where individuals will compete for Australian Ranking (AR) points in addition to the championship title.

Tennis West Schools Development Coordinator and Bruce Cup Tournament Director Mr Jason Marrable says the opportunity for WA to host the prominent Bruce Cup event is exciting for everyone involved.

“The opportunity for our WA players to represent their state at home, means our players will be well supported by their family and friends,”

“School Sport WA has worked incredibly hard in getting the event to Perth and it promises to be a jam packed week of tennis, comradery and friendship,”

“The players love coming together to represent their state. There’s something truly unique about playing as a team in a typically individual sport,” said Marrable.

The event which has been played since 1938, was first introduced by the then Minister for Education, the Hon HA Bruce, MLA. Seen as a launching pad for many of the countries most decorated players, the likes of tennis legend Rod Laver and fellow Australian pro-circuit players Pat Rafter, Todd Woodbridge, Mark Philippoussis, Wally Masur, Casey Dellacqua, Fed Cup Captain Alicia Molik and World No.1 Ash Barty, were all representative Bruce Cup participants of their time.

The event commences with an official team welcome ceremony at 5pm on Saturday 12 October at the Alexander Park TC (Clyde Road, Menora). Media are welcome to attend.
