Grand Slam Doubles Champion John Peers has today claimed the first UTR Pro Tennis Series event in Perth. The Australian Davis Cup Team member secured the coveted title over returning US College Student, Scott Jones, 6-3, 6-2.
Whilst a series of rain delays halted play over the first two days of the event, both Jones and Peers came into the Final undefeated in their respective pools.
Despite being a doubles specialist, Peers secured a comfortable win in just under 90min, following a confident week of singles play in which he has not lost a set.
“It’s certainly nice to get a win under the belt, and it’s good fun to get out and compete again.”
“It’s a little different playing singles, but it’s also a bit of fun and something a bit different for me. So I’m just enjoying being back on the court and competing” Peers said.
Perth Tournament Director, Loretta Hughes said she is pleased to see the return of professional tennis in Perth.
“We are delighted to see the return of professional tennis to our city, and having someone of the calibre of John Peers playing in the event has been a real boon for Perth”.
“Not only do these events provide much needed match experience for the players, it also provides some of our emerging junior players with the opportunity to play against some high quality opposition and learn from some of the best in the country”
The UTR Pro Tennis Series features events in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, and provides players with the opportunity to compete for $450,000 in prize money following the months-long suspension of the international tours due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The events are a key opportunity for players to return to tournament play. Strict biosecurity measures are in place at each event.
The second Perth UTR Pro Tennis Series will commence on Sunday 19 July.

What is a UTR? Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) is an international tennis rating system that connects millions of tennis players around the world to help them find better matches locally. UTR reflects a player’s current skill level based on head-to-head match scores, and rates all players across age, gender and nationality on the same 16-point scale. Every player can have a UTR – from the pros to juniors to social tennis players.
