The South West Zone have continued their dominance for a second year running, claiming back-to-back titles in the teams event of the 2020 D’Arcy Slater Cup (boys) and Women in Tennis Foundation Cup (girls) regional competitions held at the Busselton Tennis Club last week.

In a tightly contested repeat of the 2019 D’Acry Slater Cup Singles Final, Mid West player Caleb Sewell overcame last year’s winner and South West player Korbin Priestley, to eventually win 7-5, 1-6, 17-15.

The Women in Tennis Foundation Cup Singles Final saw both girls enter the match having not lost a set all week. Eventual winner Naomi Vakadranu (Peel) needed a second set tie break to claim the match over 2019 winner Holly Cucel (South West), resulting in a 2-6, 6-4, 10-4 win.

More than 80 young players from across the State took part in the prestigious and longstanding regional tournaments, with players from seven different zones, including the Mid West, Upper Great Southern, Lower Great Southern, Great Southern, South West, Central Districts, Pilbara and Eastern Districts, competing in the four day 14/U junior regional event.

Succeeding the original Goolagong Cup (girls) and Clough Cup (boys), the Women in Tennis Foundation Cup and D’Arcy Slater Cup have retained a stronghold on the regional tournament calendar, owing to the competitive opportunity they bring to the aspiring athletes across regional WA.

Tennis West Competitions and Tournaments Manager, Loretta Hughes says the D’Arcy Slater Cup and Women in Tennis Foundation Cup events provide a much needed opportunity for regional players to compete competitively.

“The D’Arcy Slater Cup and Women in Tennis Foundation Cup are really important events on the competition calendar,”

“The events provide really important competitive play opportunities for our regional players and we continue to be impressed by the number of talented regional players who compete for the prestigious titles,”

“Seeing so many players compete at such a high standard is a wonderful reminder of how important it is to provide these competitive opportunities to the junior athletes in the regional zones,”

“WA has a host of talented players out in the regions and these tournaments are crucial to the ongoing development of these aspiring athletes,” Hughes said.

Supporting the D’Arcy Slater Cup since 2004, the D’Arcy Slater Foundation continues to do so in recognition of D’Arcy’s great love of tennis. D’Arcy, who tragically drowned in the flooded Helena River in 1991, was an enthusiastic member of the Goomalling Tennis Club and the Guildford Grammar Preparatory School tennis team, as well as Captain of tennis in year 8. The Foundation’s sponsorship is country focused in as a tribute to D’Arcy’s enjoyment of playing country tennis tournaments.

Supporting the Foundation Cup since 2002, Women in Tennis continue to champion for opportunities in tennis for all female players including players within both metropolitan and regional WA.
