21 July 2022 | Tennis West

Just days after Matt Ebden and Max Purcell raised their trophies to rapturous applause on the world’s most famous centre court after pulling off victory at Wimbledon 2022, Ebden was back home in Perth and celebrating his outstanding win with the WA community.

As part of these celebrations, Tennis West hosted a Wimbledon-inspired Brunch at the State Tennis Centre yesterday morning.

Ebden and his nearest and dearest joined an array of esteemed guests for an intimate brunch with Tennis West stakeholders, members of local government, sports journalists, Hall of Champions inductees and former players all eager to honour Ebden and his tennis journey so far.

Complete with scones and strawberries and cream, and a replay of Ebden’s winning performance, the brunch included a special address from Lanie Chopping, Director General of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC).

Ebden also addressed the guests, in a heartfelt Q&A where he spoke candidly about his tennis journey so far, reflecting passionately on his time playing at local clubs as a youngster, and touched on how he felt during when Purcell and himself clinched the title.

“It wasn’t planned,” he laughed, referencing the iconic moment where the duo fell on their backs in perfect synchronisation onto the grass after Ebden’s winning ace.
