The SunSmart Schools Classic kicked off last week with over 190 students from around the South West region competing in the Academy Plate, Herbert Edwards, and Slazenger Cup in Bunbury.
The SunSmart Schools Tennis Classic, run every year in Term One and facilitated by School Sport WA and Tennis West is the largest participation tennis tournament in Western Australia.
Run since 1935, the tournament sees metro and regional primary and secondary school students compete in local play-off teams-based events with the regional competitions held across the Great Southern, Upper Great Southern, Central Districts, Eastern Districts and South West zones.
Tennis continues to be the number one preferred sport in schools with the SunSmart Schools Tennis Classic teams event a key step in the pathway to lifelong participation in tennis.
Tennis West’s Schools and Pathways Coordinator Benjamin Cribb said the SunSmart Schools Classic gives students the opportunity to play with friends in a fun and competitive environment.
“The Schools Classic events provides an excellent opportunity for participants to showcase their tennis skills and compete against other students from different schools from around the state,” Ben said.
The series of inter-school events that make up the SunSmart Schools Tennis Classic contribute to three major events; the Slazenger Cup, Herbert Edwards Cup and the Academy Plate and are played at various venues throughout the state.
Tennis West and School Sport WA partner to deliver this tennis event and it is the pinnacle of school teams events in WA with all schools in Western Australia invited to enter.
The SunSmart Schools Tennis Classic Academy Plate Country Final, which was first awarded in 1963, is made possible through the ongoing generosity and support of Healthway and the D’Arcy Slater Foundation.
The SunSmart Schools Classic continues throughout the month of March.
