Tennis West State League continues this weekend with matches spanning from Friday night to Saturday afternoon. The feature match sees Applecross host Peppermint Grove in the Women’s State League this Saturday from 1 pm.
As the Tennis West State League heads into Round 6 with only two rounds left before the Christmas break, the Women’s competition is tighter than ever with four teams all within 10 points of each other jostling for a top four finish.
Applecross come into this match in the best form, having won their past two matches against Dalkeith and Royal Kings Park. A win for Applecross will shake up the ladder positions as we head into the Christmas break. The young side has found their form with Ruby Broadbent and Jaun Yum playing consistent tennis in the No.1 and No.2 spot.
Peppermint Grove currently sit 2nd on the ladder with their only loss coming at the hands of ladder leaders Hensman Park and losing (in games won) to Royal Kings Park. Last week Peppermint Grove bounced back from a two-game losing streak defeating Alexander Park. The team has been steady with No.1 ranked Jessie Culley and No.2 ranked Tara Aleksic playing well in those positions.
Last time they met in round one at Peppermint Grove Tennis Club, Peppermint Grove won 4-2 with Culley and Aleksic winning their matches then winning both the doubles matches to take out the tie.
Key match-up: Ruby Broadbent (Applecross) v Jessie Culley (Peppermint Grove)
Broadbent has held her own playing in the number one spot for Applecross with an impressive 3-2 record. Broadbent’s big wins have come from last year’s MVP Lauren Nikoloski (Dalkeith), Ella Nurkic (Hensman Park) and Peyton Duckett (Alexander Park). Jessie Culley is also in some form with a 3-2 record playing in the number one spot for Peppermint Grove. Culley’s last match was hard fought, going down to Peyton Duckett 4-6, 6-4, 11-13 in a see-sawing match. The last time these players met, Culley managed to edge out Broadbent, winning in a third set tie-breaker 6-6, 6-4, 10-3.
