It was an action-packed day of fun last Wednesday with Tennis West hosting 3rd edition of the Boorloo Indigenous Tennis Carnival.

The carnival hosted primary and high school students from Ashfield Primary School and SEDA College’s “Baldja Mob” focused on participation and a lead in event to the National Indigenous Tennis Carnival to be held in Darwin in August.

The day started with a smoking ceremony and welcome to country on centre court by Cyril and Destiny from Milliyaan Aboriginal Services.

The morning continued with cultural activities lead by Milliyaan Aboriginal Services, then concluded with students hopping onto the courts and participating in pickle ball, pop tennis, hot shot and doubles tennis and other fun games as an introduction to tennis.

Students were treated to a BBQ lunch from Tennis West staff and ice cream from Gather Foods, an Indigenous catering business.

Tennis West Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lead Zara Cavalot was proud to continue with the success of the Indigenous carnival and embrace diversity by being welcoming, safe and inclusive for everyone.

“We wanted to put on a fun and engaging day where young people could learn about tennis, pick up a racquet for the first time and have a hit on the court, and learn about First Nations culture off the court.”

“The Boorloo Indigenous Tennis Carnival is a celebration of culture, community, and the joy of tennis. It’s a testament to the talent of Indigenous people, showcasing the heritage of our First Nations people. We wanted all our participants to feel proud, learn something new, and enjoy a hit on court,” said Zara.

Ashfield Primary School Deputy Principal Darius Schwarz highlighted the positive experience the students had, with the help of the coaches, engaging with the students and making the learning process both educational and enjoyable.

“We are immensely proud of our students’ participation and enthusiasm throughout the carnival. Their eagerness to learn and embrace new experiences truly embodies the values of inclusivity and cultural appreciation that we hold dear at Ashfield Primary School.”

“A huge thank you to Cyril Yarran, Zara Cavalot, Marisa Gianotti, Tennis West, the coaches, and all involved in making this event a resounding success. Here’s to many more enriching experiences ahead,” said Darius.
