The National Indigenous Tennis Carnival (NITC) is the pinnacle event of the First Nations tennis pathway in Australia, celebrating First Nations culture both on and off the court. The event brings together hundreds of individuals and groups to celebrate youth, music, art, food, and health through tennis, cultural ctivities, and workshops.
The 2024 edition of the NITC will be held from August 8 to 11, at the Darwin International Tennis Centre.
Last Thursday night, Tennis West held an information night and team dinner for the players, their families and staff. The team participated in on court activities with coach Radu Vaidean, joined an information session about NITC, and were presented with Team WA gear including hoodies and backpacks.
Tennis West Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lead Zara Cavalot was thrilled to present Tennis West’s biggest team yet to represent WA at NITC next week.
“I am so impressed by the reach we have across the state, from the Southwest to the Gibson Desert, we have diverse experiences all coming together with something in common.”
It is a privilege to attend NITC, we’re very lucky to be able to work with Tennis Northern Territory and Tennis Australia to provide such a special opportunity to 15 young First Nations tennis players from WA.”
It is wonderful to have players coming back for a second, third or fourth time, and to have new players joining us for the first time,” said Zara.
Tennis West will be sending a total of 15 players to compete in various categories.
These players have come from Tennis West’s squads, school and club connections, and State Indigenous lead in events.
