A strong West Australian contingent featuring Maddison Inglis, Talia Gibson and Astra Sharma is set to contest the women’s qualifying singles competitions at this year’s US Open.
Astra Sharma will look to repeat her efforts in 2021, where she went through qualifying and made the first round of the US Open. The world No. 150 Sharma will come up against world No. 220 Margaux Rouvroy (FRA).
Maddison Inglis (World No. 226) will be looking to go one better in the qualifying rounds after making it to the final qualifying round in 2022. Inglis will come up against World No. 144, Alexandra Eala (PHI).
This US Open qualifying will be Talia Gibson’s first appearance at Flushing Meadows. The World No. 170 comes into the event with some form, having made the third round of qualifying at Wimbledon last month.
The three West Aussies will be looking to join fellow West Australian Taylah Preston who secured a spot in the US Open main draw.
The four-day qualifying competition begins in New York today.
To complete a successful qualifying campaign, players need to win three rounds. If they do so, they will join 14 Australians (11 men including WA’s Tristan Schoolkate and three women) already in the singles main draws at the final Grand Slam tournament of the season.
