West Aussie Talia Gibson has capped off a perfect fortnight, winning the Perth International ITF W75 #2 Singles title 6-2 6-4 against Japan’s Eri Shimizu.
The win was Gibson’s second title win in Perth after winning the Perth International ITF W75 #1 against fellow West Aussie Maddison Inglis. The win will also move her closer to the top 100 of the women’s world rankings.
After finishing runner-up twice in last year’s edition of the Perth International, Gibson responded in style going through the two weeks of competition undefeated.
Today’s win capped off an incredible two weeks where Gibson also won the Perth International ITF W75 #1 Doubles title with Maddison Inglis.
Gibson started strong from the outset, winning five of the first six games, taking the first set 6-2.
The dominance continued in the second set and the match looked like it would near completion when Gibson went up 3-0, however Shimizu fought back breaking Gibson’s serve twice to take it to 3-3. Gibson would hold her nerve, breaking back and taking the second set 6-4.
“It feels amazing to go back-to-back, it’s been a great couple of weeks here in Perth, we’ve had some awesome weather, and I am super happy to be back again this year in Perth and play these tournaments,” said Talia Gibson after today’s final.
“I didn’t need to change too much with my game since last week’s final. I’ve been working on playing my game, sticking to what I know best but most of all mentally was going to be the biggest challenge this week after a big week last week, trying to push through these matches and be as strong as I can.”
“I will look to have a little break, go back to Brisbane to train at the National Tennis Academy and then look to get into the upcoming WTA events then the Australian tennis summer.”
