Members of the Tennis West Participation team ventured out to the Great Southern in late September.

As part of Tennis West’s strategic plan, the participation team visits each DLGSC region across the financial year, and this year the team visited Albany as part of the Great Southern Roadshow.

With over 20 schools locally and a new tennis centre being built, it highlighted the opportunity to activate the area in time for the summer of tennis. The main goal was to put the sport of tennis on the radar and continue to deliver clinics to over 450 students across several local schools which included Flinders Park Primary School, Little Grove Primary School, Great Southern Grammar, Albany Primary School, Bethel Christian College and Kendernup Primary School.

The participation team delivered many activations. These included a community upskilling session at Emu Point Tennis Club, showcasing activities through the playing for life philosophy and game sense approach.

The team also delivered a Hot Shots and a cardio session at Mount Barker and Tenterden Tennis Clubs, and with the help of local coach, Nelson Stanborough, Tennis West handed out 60 racquets to the students of Kendernup Primary School.

Tennis West Schools and Pathways Officer Radu Vaidean said it was an absolute pleasure and privilege to visit the city of Albany.

“It was great to see so many students willing and eager to participate in the various tennis activities but also a great chance to plant the seed to potentially conduct Red Ball Competitions and Schools Classics events.”

“It’s been an overwhelmingly positive experience, and we can’t wait to be back out again next year,” said Radu.

Thank you to the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Lotterywest for their ongoing support of Tennis in Western Australia.
