The 2024 D’Arcy Slater and Women in Tennis (WIT) Foundation Cup wrapped up in Bunbury this week for both the team and individual events drawing a record number of entries.

A total of 147 players split almost 50/50 between the two competitions came from all over the state including a few awesome 8-year-olds. The players came from as far south as Albany and as far north as Broome and as far east as Esperance and Merredin making the journey to Bunbury Tennis Club for four days of competition.

In the Boy’s D’Arcy Slater Cup, it was the opposite to last year’s results with Lower Great Southern going one better, winning the team’s competition over Southwest. Upper Great Southern boys hung on to the bronze by a couple of games of the Midwest 1 team.

In the Girls Women in Tennis Foundation Cup, Lower Great Southern went back-to-back with Great Southern girls finishing in the Silver Medal position and last year’s runner ups Southwest coming in third.

In the prestigious individual event of the D’Arcy Slater Cup, last year’s winner Denby Sharpe from Albany prevailed over Cameron Cockburn from the Southwest to claim his third title. The winner and finalist both received a scholarship for their tennis development thanks to the D’Arcy Slater Foundation.

In the girl’s WIT Foundation Cup, it was a repeat of the 2023 final with Tea Zizek from Albany (Lower Great Southern) overcoming Alifaye Gidgup from Brunswick Junction (South West) in a tight two set match.

In a first for the women’s event, the D’Arcy Slater Foundation offered a scholarship for the winner and finalist. The scholarship recipients will receive financial support for tennis expenses including tournament travel, coaching and event entry costs.

Tennis West Events Coordinator Brad Ladyman praised the increase in numbers and community support behind this tournament.

“The record-breaking numbers is a fantastic result for regional junior tennis development pathways.”

“It reflects the huge amount of work that regional coaching providers are doing in increasing the number of junior players committing to their development.”

Tennis West would like to thank D’Arcy Slater Foundation for coming onboard to support the Girls individual event in the form of a Scholarship,” said Brad.

Providers involved were Oncourt Tennis (Vincent), Esperance Tennis Academy (Bastien), Remote Tennis Services/Suncity Tennis Academy (Jarron/Alana/Oscar/Vinnie), Bunbury Tennis Academy (Andrew/Tanya), Tennis Academy Perth (Mike/Dwayne), Dynamic Coaching (Natalie), Meg Henry and Justin Maguire.

This event would not be possible without the great support of the D’Arcy Slater and Women’s in Tennis Foundation.

Supporting the D’Arcy Slater Cup since 2004, the D’Arcy Slater Foundation continues to do so in recognition of D’Arcy’s great love of tennis. D’Arcy, who tragically drowned in the flooded Helena River in 1991, was an enthusiastic member of the Goomalling Tennis Club, the Guildford Grammar School Preparatory School tennis team and the Captain of tennis in year 8. The Foundation’s sponsorship is country focused in recognition of D’Arcy’s enjoyment of playing country tennis tournaments.

Supporting the Foundation Cup since 2002, Women in Tennis continue to champion for opportunities in tennis for all female players including players within both metropolitan and regional WA.
