Tennis West is excited to announce the launch of its new and first ever Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Operational Plan! This is a three-year strategy, 2024-2027, designed to ensure that tennis becomes the most inclusive sport in Western Australia, and objective held by the whole organisation and championed by Tennis Wes CEO Olivia Birkett and DEI Lead Zara Cavalot. This ambitious plan focuses on an intersectional approach on four portfolios: women and girls, First Nations communities, all abilities, and culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) groups. Actions and deliverables are set below four pillars: Lead, Educate, Promote and Activate. With the support of Tennis West CEO, the entire workforce is united in this effort to make the sport accessible to everyone, regardless of background or ability.
Tennis West’s DEI Team consisting of Paula Gates and Zara Cavalot began work on the DEI Operational Plan in November 2023 with thorough considerations on the journey Tennis West has taken so far, where we are now, and where we want to head towards.
The DEI Operational Plan was developed in consultation with communities and stakeholders, including diverse athletes, coaches, admins and organisations with the goal to foster an environment where every person has the opportunity to participate in tennis, and thrive The strategy outlines clear objectives to break down barriers, create pathways for underrepresented groups, and ensure inclusion is at the heart of every initiative, department and policy.” Tennis West DEI Lead Zara Cavalot says.
The success of this plan depends on the collective efforts of the entire Tennis West workforce. From the operations to coaching, from marketing to competitions and leagues, all departments have explored how their workplans can support the deliverables of the DEI Operational Plan. Training, resources, and ongoing education on DEI principles will be provided to ensure that the workforce reflects and serves the diverse communities of WA.
The Tennis West CEO has made clear the organisation’s unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion, stating that “Our goal is to ensure tennis is a sport for all, where no one is left behind. This operational plan sets the foundation for a future where diversity is celebrated, and everyone can thrive. Together, we can make tennis the most inclusive sport in Western Australia.”
Tennis West invites the community to join this exciting journey as it takes bold steps toward achieving a truly inclusive sporting environment.
