Congratulations Tika Baxter! The Inaugural Club Corner Volunteer of the Month!

Tika has recently stepped into the role of Ladies Captain, and her impact on the Margaret River Tennis Club has been nothing short of transformative. With boundless enthusiasm, innovative ideas, and a genuine passion for fostering inclusivity, Tika has ensured that the ladies of the club feel recognized, appreciated, and truly integrated into the broader tennis community.

Her infectious energy and dedication extend far beyond her leadership duties. Always armed with a warm smile and a can-do attitude, Tika is a steadfast support to all members, tackling challenges with grace and determination. Her ability to inspire and motivate has made her a beloved figure not just among the ladies, but throughout the entire club.

Tika’s unwavering commitment and dynamic approach have made her an invaluable asset to the Margaret River Tennis Club, and we’re thrilled to see the positive changes she continues to bring to the court and beyond.

How did you get into tennis?

I learned to play tennis as part of a refugee sports program at my primary school. I was a very shy 8yr old Timor- Leste girl, who couldn’t speak a word of English. My tennis coach was a great mentor. He inspired me to learn a new sport with such intent that transferred my insecurities to become a confident player, to become a confident student through the rest of my primary school years and later in life.

Why join Margaret River, and what motivates you to volunteer?

Being part of the MRTC committee and playing singles, mixed, women’s and south west women’s pennants throughout the season motivates me to volunteer. This is my second year as the women’s captain – building relationships with the pennant coordinators and the club captain. Whereas a team we continue to support and encourage the women   in our club of all ages to participate in various club activities such as cardio, club championships, register for first time in the South-West pennants.

Can you share a memorable experience or achievement while volunteering during your time at Margaret River Tennis Club?

My greatest achievement was to be chosen to be part in the WLIT- Women leaders in tennis program in 2023. I had just volunteered to be part of the committee after playing for so many years at my club. I met so many inspirational women across the state and together we developed more skills which helped me to work together with other committee members for the future viability of my club.

What is your favourite part about being involved in the Tennis Community in WA?

My favourite part of being involved in the tennis community of W.A is to be a role model to the young girls and women from cultural and diverse backgrounds in the Augusta Margaret River Shire. To encourage them to achieve their goals if given the opportunity. To be part of a sports community is so important for the wellbeing of individuals today and for the future.
What would be the one main bit of advice you would give someone thinking of getting into tennis, or volunteering?

My advice to anyone thinking of getting into tennis – “have a go, play for life, volunteer for a better world!!!
