A couple of close games and a couple of upsets headlined round seven of the men’s and women’s State League.

In the women’s, Royal Kings Park jumped ahead of Peppermint Grove on the ladder while Dalkeith upset Cottesloe to keep their finals chances alive. While in the men’s, Cottesloe and Peppermint Grove flexed their muscles at the top of the table and Alexander Park jumped into the top four with an impressive win over UWA.

Key match up’s this round:

WOMEN’S:

Hensman Park v Cottesloe at Hensman Park Tennis Club

Friday 14 February, 6.00 pm

This match promises to be a good one with the top two teams battling it out one more time before potentially meeting again in the finals. Hensman Park is undefeated this season and remarkably yet to drop a rubber at home on the Hensman Park hard courts while Cottesloe plays their third match on hard courts with a one win and one loss result.

Last time these teams met in round 2 at Cottesloe Tennis Club, it was Hensman Park that edged out as winners in a game that could have gone either way had it not been for bad light stopping the final doubles game.

Cottesloe will want to ensure they have their strongest team, and Alicia Molik could be the answer to that. Molik has had an impressive season so far, going undefeated from five singles matches. For Hensman Park, playing in the number one spot, Alice Stevens has been the form player, not dropping a singles match from all seven appearances.

A win for Cottesloe will keep them in the race for the all-important top spot while a win for Hensman Park will all but certainly lock away top spot and a home final.

MEN’S:

Royal Kings Park v Alexander Park at Royal Kings Park Tennis Club

Saturday 15 February, 1.00 pm

There is a lot at stake for this fixture with only 6 points separating the two teams on the ladder. Alexander Park jumped Royal Kings Park after a win against UWA but both teams have only won two matches this season. The reality is, one of these teams will miss out on finals and this match will have huge implications on who plays finals.

Last time these two teams met, Alexander Park led 3-1 in the singles ties but bad light stopped play when Royal Kings Park were coming home strong in both doubles ties. The match will come down to whoever has the depth. Both teams have strong lists, it’s just a case of who is selected on the day.

Alexander Park’s top duo of Scott Jones and Ashwin Sharma have led the way for the side, regularly playing as number one and two and both having a positive win-loss record. Scott Jones has been the standout, winning four from five matches this season, including a win against potential opponent Hans Bustiman earlier in the season.
