As the club’s dedicated President for the past five years, Chris has gone above and beyond in fostering a welcoming and vibrant environment for all members. His unwavering commitment, leadership, and passion for tennis have rightfully earned him recognition as Tennis West’s Club Corner Volunteer of the Month.
Chris and his family arrived in Tenterden 12 years ago, quickly immersing themselves in the local community. It wasn’t long before Chris took on a leadership role at Tenterden Tennis Club, first as Vice President in 2019 and then as President in 2020. Since then, he has been a driving force behind the club’s recent growth and achievements.
A natural leader, Chris has worked tirelessly to create an inclusive and engaging space for tennis lovers of all ages. His enthusiasm for the sport is infectious. He welcomes new members with open arms and encourages participation through fun and family-friendly events. Whether it’s a casual hit on the weekend or a club-wide tournament, Chris ensures that Tenterden Tennis Club is a place where everyone feels at home.
One of Chris’s most significant contributions came in 2023 with the construction of four new tennis courts. His determination and organisational skills were instrumental in bringing this ambitious project to life. From spearheading fundraising efforts—such as a successful Grain Drive that raised $7,066—to coordinating countless working bees, Chris was at the forefront every step of the way. He generously donated his time, machinery, and expertise, always leading by example. Club Life Member Bill Waldron summed it up perfectly during the official court opening: “Chris has gone above and beyond… his enthusiasm, time, and dedication to this project is a wonderful thing to see.”
Beyond his work at the tennis club, Chris is deeply involved in the wider Tenterden community. He serves as Chairperson of the Gillamii Centre, Fire Control Captain for Tenterden, and has played key roles in the local Anzac service, Cranbrook Primary School P&C, and various agricultural and sporting organisations. His willingness to volunteer across multiple sectors speaks volumes about his dedication to the community.
Chris’s impact extends far beyond administrative duties. He’s the first to arrive on Saturday mornings, ensuring the courts are in pristine condition. He makes sausage rolls for mixed doubles events, prepares coffee on tournament days, and never hesitates to lend a hand wherever needed. His warm personality and ability to bring people together make him not just a leader, but a friend to many.
Supported by his wife Kylie and their daughters Abbie, Zoe, and Isabelle, Chris has set an incredible example of community spirit. Kylie, a key figure in the club’s catering efforts, and their girls, who are actively involved in both tennis and club activities, exemplify the importance of family participation in sports.
Chris Tomlinson’s passion and selflessness have made an indelible mark on Tenterden Tennis Club. His tireless efforts have strengthened the club’s foundation and enriched the lives of its members. Tennis West is proud to celebrate Chris as the Club Corner Volunteer of the Month—an honor well deserved for a man who truly embodies the spirit of giving back.
