The Regional Talent Series, an initiative by Tennis West in collaboration with key regional stakeholders, is approaching its culmination with the final event scheduled for April 12th and 13th at the State Tennis Centre in Perth.
This series has successfully conducted eight tournaments across seven regions in Western Australia, engaging 104 boys and girls aged 12 and under.
Each regional tournament crowned champions in both boys’ and girls’ categories, who earned invitations to participate in a two-day Talent Identification (ID) camp at the State Tennis Centre. This camp aims to provide these young athletes with advanced training and exposure to higher levels of competition.
The series commenced on February 16th in Narrogin and continued through various locations throughout the state including Mount Barker, Goomalling, South Mandurah, Katanning, Broome, Esperance, Busselton, and Geraldton. These tournaments have not only showcased the depth of young tennis talent across Western Australia but also emphasised Tennis West’s commitment to nurturing regional players.
Tennis West Tennis Development Manager North, Kay-Leigh Nicholas has been inspired by the regional talent series so far.
“It’s been fantastic to see how the Regional Talent Series has brought so many young players together from across Western Australia.”
“The enthusiasm and talent on display at each event have been truly inspiring, and it’s been really rewarding to help create more opportunities for kids to compete and grow in the sport.”
“These tournaments have been designed to complement the incredible coaching programs that are being delivered by dedicated coaches and volunteers across regional WA by offering additional pathways for players to be able to participate and compete within their DLGSC region,” said Kay-Leigh.
Having such a positive uptake on these regional series in year one is testament to the appetite for tennis within the regions and further highlights the importance of establishing sustainable playing pathways across WA.
As the final event approaches this weekend, anticipation builds for the Talent ID camp, where regional champions will converge to hone their skills and potentially set the stage for future successes in the sport.
Tennis West extends its thanks and appreciation to the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries for the ongoing support through the Regional Servicing Grant.
