There were champions galore at two major tournaments this month. The month of April saw the Singles Club Champions of Champions crowned as well as the completion of the CBH Group Country Championships. 

The singles part of the Champions of Champions saw the tournament return to the grass courts of Cottesloe Tennis Club last weekend. 

In the women’s singles, it was Elena Manoj representing Cottesloe Tennis Club who caused a big upset, defeating fellow Cottesloe representative and number one seed Alicia Molik 6-1 4-6 11-9 in a tight third set tie-break. 

In the women’s singles division two, Madalena Florena from Scarborough Tennis Club went through the rounds the hard way, defeating number one seed Jodie Poole from Mt Lawley Tennis Club in round one then defeating number two seed Eva Lings from Safety Bay Tennis Club 6-3 6-1 in the final. 

In the men’s, Cottesloe claimed their first Champion of Champions singles win after going down in the final last year. Max Weir represented Cottesloe and was challenged by Luca Katsamakis from Mt Lawley Tennis Club losing the first set, however bounced back strongly taking the second set and winning the third set match tie-break and match 1-6 6-0 10-7. 

In division two, Aden Rezvan from Applecross Tennis Club was too strong against Petr Langer from Peppermint Grove in the final winning 6-1 6-1. Petr Langer was the surprise packet in the division, winning his round one match against number two seed Stevan Ilic from East Fremantle Lawn Tennis Club in three sets then defeating Dylan Chuah from Bull Creek Tennis Club in the semi-final. 

In division three, Peter Errey from Loton Park Tennis Club came out on top against Samora Wa Azaro from Kardinya Tennis Club 6-3 6-2. 

As one of the most prestigious events on the Tennis West calendar, the Club Champion of Champions brings together champions from each affiliated tennis club for an exciting knockout competition to determine the ultimate champion. 

The Champion of Champions Doubles is still to be played starting the weekend after Easter. 

The Tennis West Club Champion of Champions is supported by Dunlop, Maxiblock Sunscreen and Splash Bottles & Co. 

The CBH Group Country Championships saw 96 players from as far north as Broome in the Kimberley and as far south as Albany in the Great Southern and all the way east to Esperance competed at Alexander Park Tennis Club and the weather and conditions could not have been more perfect. 

The CBH Group Country Championships is one of the important regional tennis events in Western Australia and has a rich history with some of the best players in WA coming from the regional areas. Longstanding country tennis supporters for over ten years, CBH Group continue to support this fantastic tournament. 

In the Under 14’s Singles draws, Great Southern’s Denby Sharpe was too good for fellow Great Southern representative Fernando Gatti to win the Henry Ladyman Memorial Junior Boy’s Country Singles Championship. In the girl’s draw Great Southern was represented by both the winner and finalist with Tea Zizek defeating Ebony Westlake to win the Dene and June Rundle Junior Girls Country Championship. 

In the men’s singles, Paul Starkie from Southwest defeated Brendan Clark from the Southwest. In the women’s singles, Peel’s Naomi Vakadruna was too strong for Diana Thompson from the Southwest. The pair then teamed up for the doubles and defeated Melanie Bromley and Sharon Le Goueuff from the Southwest. In the men’s doubles the Midwest and Esperance pair Jarron Kretchsmann and Bastien Herenton were too strong for Southwest pair Colin and Brendan Clark.
