For more than five decades, Graeme Kennett has been the heart and soul of Maylands Tennis Club. Since joining in 1974, Graeme’s remarkable contribution has helped shape the club into the vibrant, community-focused space it is today. A true volunteer extraordinaire, Graeme embodies the spirit of dedication, generosity, and leadership, and Tennis West is proud to recognise him as this month’s Club Corner Volunteer of the Month.
Graeme’s involvement with the club has spanned nearly every possible role. From his early days as Social Treasurer in 1974, a position he held almost continuously through to 2022 and resumed again in 2023 to serving as Treasurer, Captain, Grounds Liaison, and President across multiple terms, Graeme has worn every hat imaginable. He currently continues his service as Vice President and a valued Committee Member, roles he’s held for many years.
His leadership history is impressive: President from 1994–1999 and again from 2001–2004, and Club Captain from 2006–2011. As Grounds Liaison since 2013, Graeme has ensured the club facilities remain in top shape, always advocating for the upkeep and improvement of the grounds. No task is too big or too small, whether it’s securing a new water cooler, facilitating school access on Fridays, or stocking the club bar, Graeme is the go to person for getting things done.
Graeme is also a passionate player. He represented the club in pennants competitions between 1975 and 2018 and earned numerous titles including multiple Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles Championships.
Most recently, Graeme played a key role in the club’s successful application for the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) grant, another example of his enduring commitment to the club’s future.
President Judy Hogben AM summed it up best: “Graeme truly is an extraordinary volunteer and typifies the qualities that enable small clubs like Maylands to survive, not only to survive, but to thrive.”
Congratulations, Graeme Kennett, on being named Tennis West’s Club Corner Volunteer of the Month. Your tireless dedication over 50 years has built more than a tennis club, it’s built a community.
